Note the file location
You'll need to find this file in the next step to upload it. Most browsers show downloads in the bottom-left corner or in a downloads bar.

Optional: Preview the PDF
Open the PDF to see what a realistic planning application looks like. Notice where the applicant name, address, and description appear in the document.
Tip: If you want to test multiple documents, you can come back to this step later and try a different application type.
Understanding the sample documents
Each sample document represents a common planning application type:
- House Extension Application (Householder): Most common type - small extensions to existing dwellings. Typically 2-4 page applications.
- Change of Use Application (Full): More complex - changing building purpose. Includes multiple use classes and floor area calculations.
- New Dwelling Application (Outline): Most detailed - new building proposals. Includes site area, dwelling counts, and detailed descriptions.
Troubleshooting
Download link not working
If clicking "Download PDF" doesn't work:
- Right-click the button and choose "Save link as..."
- Check your browser's download settings aren't blocking PDFs
- Try a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge all supported)
- Check you have enough disk space for the file (1-4 MB)
- Disable browser extensions that might block downloads
Can't find downloaded file
If you can't locate the downloaded PDF:
- Check your browser's Downloads page (usually Ctrl+J or Cmd+Shift+J)
- Look in your default Downloads folder
- Search your computer for "sample-house-extension.pdf" (or the document name)
- Check if your browser asks where to save files - you may have saved it elsewhere
- Try downloading again and watch where your browser saves it
PDF won't open or looks corrupted
If the PDF won't open or displays incorrectly:
- Try opening with Adobe Reader or another PDF viewer
- Re-download the file - the download may have been interrupted
- Check the file size matches what's shown (1.2 MB, 2.8 MB, or 3.5 MB)
- Ensure you have a PDF reader installed on your computer
- Try a different sample document
